The Honda S360 is a sports car with a 360 cc (22 cu in) engine manufactured by Honda.[1] It was one of the first automobiles created by the company known for their motorcycles. The S360 was unveiled on 5 June 1962 during the 11th Nation Honda Meeting General Assembly held at Suzuka Circuit, but was never put into production.

Like the S360, the S500 used a high-tech engine developed from Honda's motorcycle expertise.[2] It was a dual overhead cam straight-4 with four carburettors and a 9500 rpm redline.[1] Originally intended to displace 492 cc, the production version was 531 cc and produced 44 hp at 8000 rpm.[1] Weighing just 1500 lb (680 kg), the tiny S500 could hit 80 mph (129 km/h).

Powered by a DOHC, water-cooled, four-cylinder inline engine with four carburetors, the engine capacity was increased to 606 cc from the S500's 531 cc. The engine produced 57 hp (43 kW) at 8,500 rpm and had a top speed of 90 mph (140 km/h). With the convertible weighing in at mere 1,576 lb (715 kg), the extra sheet metal of the coupe only added 33 lb (15 kg) to the overall weight. Suspension was independent with sealed roller chain drive to each rear wheel.[2]

The S800 is a sports car from Honda. Introduced at the 1965 Tokyo Motor Show, the S800 would replace the successful Honda S600 as the company's image car and would compete with the Austin-Healey Sprite, MG Midget, Triumph Spitfire and Fiat 850 Spider.

Like the S600, it was available as either a coupe or roadster and continued the advanced technology of its predecessors. The 791 cc straight-4 engine produced 70 hp (52 kW) at 8000 rpm, thus making this Honda's first 100 mph (160 km/h) automobile, but still allowing for 35 mpg (6.7 L/100 km). In April 1967 the car was described as the fastest production 1-litre car in the world thanks to its high revving engine (up to 10,000 rpm) and the manufacturer's history of manufacturing powerful relatively low capacity motor-cycle engines.

Production ended in May 1970 with 11,536 S800s produced. Honda did not manufacture another S roadster for nearly thirty years until the release of the S2000 for the 2000 model year.

Honda's passionate sporting spirit charts a new path in the evolution of open sports cars.

Honda faced two major challenges in developing the S2000: first, to create an open body that provides the superb performance required of a true open sports car and second, to offer superior environmental friendliness and safety. To meet the first of these challenges, Honda set out to develop a car that offers the ultimate in agility and driver/car unity, as well as outstanding handling and response in city driving and rural touring alike. At the same time, Honda set out to achieve the world's highest standards in environmental friendliness and safety.

In the development of this car, Honda endeavored to meet what until now had been considered impossible technical challenges:

(1) Develop a light open-body structure with the rigidity and passenger-crash-protection qualities of a closed-body structure
(2) Develop an engine with clean exhaust emissions and world-leading power output
(3) Develop a 1,200kg-class body package and chassis to provide both superior safety and comfort and the ultimate in agility together with a taut feeling of oneness
(4) Greatly enhance driving comfort when driving with the top down

Honda called upon extensive technological know-how acquired over years of experience at the highest levels of motor racing, not hesitating to adopt entirely new features for the S2000. The S2000 represents a refusal to compromise on performance and a determination to meet environmental standards. Honda charts a new path in the evolution of open sport cars, redefining driving pleasure with its "New-Generation True Open Sports Car" concept.

Developing key new technologies to create a mass-produced open car with a taut feeling of oneness.

The High X-Bone Frame makes a new-generation true sports car a reality.

To develop a new-generation open-body structure, Honda rejected the parameters of conventional thinking and created new technologies. These technologies have been applied to virtually every detail of the car.

The first step in this direction can be found in the recently introduced "High X-Bone Frame" open-body structure. In this new frame construction, the raised center tunnel features a strong boxed-type structure that connects to the front and rear side members in a single horizontal plane. Furthermore, completely straight front side members are connected to the floor tunnel, sidesills, and floor frame to form a "three-point support structure". Impact load is thus efficiently distributed, resulting in an open body with rigidity and collision safety equal to that of a closed body without the weight penalty inevitable until now. A drive in the S2000 is one of life's great pleasures.

Behind-the-axle front-engine/rear-wheel-drive packaging for an ideal 50:50 front/rear weight distribution along with superb agility and a taut feeling of oneness.

In addition to the High X-Bone Frame, Honda has developed a variety of new technologies to offer the ultimate car/driver unity in all aspects of motoring, from acceleration to cornering and braking.

To achieve instantaneous response to steering input, the very compact 2-liter, 4-cylinder engine is moved completely behind the front axle to create a new front engine/rear drive layout. In addition, heavy components such as the fuel tank and spare tire are relocated to within the wheelbase to concentrate weight as close to the center of gravity as possible for a reduced yaw inertia moment and an optimum 50:50 front/rear weight distribution.
The driver is seated behind the car's center of gravity, enhancing the ability to feel body and rear tire movement and contributing to the snug yet open feeling of the cockpit.
The S2000 is a true next-generation front-engine, rear-drive sports convertible with a rising front-to-rear body line that creates an overall wedge-shaped appearance. This is the product of a careful arrangement of each component, starting with the front engine/rear drive behind-the-axle layout, which positions the engine low and close to the cockpit, and allows a more than adequate trunk capacity.

The 2-liter normally aspirated 4-cylinder DOHC VTEC engine combines world-leading power output with advanced exhaust emission processing.

To offer instantaneous throttle response and exhilarating performance in all driving situations, Honda developed a 2-liter normally aspirated 4-cylinder DOHC VTEC engine with a maximum output of 250PS at 8,300rpm for a specific output of 125PS per liter, and a maximum torque of 22.2kgm at 7,500rpm. Honda has further refined its proprietary VTEC technology and devised technologies to reduce friction and improve breathing efficiency to produce a high-revving, high-output engine. As a result, engine output is powerful from low engine speeds all the way up to the 9,000rpm redline.

The adoption of an exhaust secondary air system and a metallic honeycomb catalytic converter contribute to quicker processing of exhaust emissions that translates into a reduction in CO, HC, and NOx emissions approximately 50% below the upcoming 2000 exhaust emission standards.

The all-new 6-speed manual transmission features one of the world's shortest shift strokes.

Honda developed an all-new smooth-shifting, direct-action, close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission that enables the driver to exploit the S2000's engine to the full. This close-ratio gearbox is matched to the engine's torque characteristics, delivering smooth and linear acceleration, with maximum speed achieved in sixth gear. The ultra-light flywheel and highly rigid drive shaft further contribute to swift throttle response. Shift feel has been improved by rigid mounting of the shift knob to minimize vibration and the adoption of a direct-action shift mechanism located on the transmission case. A unique Independent Output Reduction (IOR) geartrain system helps reduce synchronizer load while multi-cone-type synchronizers further contribute to smoother gear changes.

The pull-type clutch, with reinforced facing materials to cope with the high engine speeds, contributes to the light shift feel while retaining compact dimensions. The S2000's transmission also features a forced lubrication system with a trochoidal oil pump, ensuring stable lubrication even under the high g-forces generated when accelerating, decelerating, and cornering.

New in-wheel type double wishbone suspension for high maximum cornering performance and superior linear response.

Honda developed a new in-wheel type double wishbone suspension specially for the S2000 to offer high maximum cornering potential and response together with superior stability and linear response. While separately providing strong lateral rigidity, the adoption of this in-wheel type design contributed to keeping the dimensions compact and the center of gravity low. Bolting the suspension onto subframes that are directly attached to the body has further enhanced cornering performance and response.

The use of floating piston-type single-tube gas-filled shock absorbers has contributed to improved roll response, and maximized tire contact, for high at-the-limit performance and stability. Furthermore, locating the rear suspension's control arm under the lower arm and forward of the axle axis improves toe and camber rigidity for further improved stability and control.

Designed for enhanced open-top driving comfort.
Unique styling that creates a snug yet spacious feeling to maximize the enjoyment of open-top driving.

The distinctive exterior design of the S2000 is in keeping with a true new-generation open sports car. Not merely an aesthetic statement, given its exceptional aerodynamic qualities, the design is also eminently practical. The S2000's aerodynamic design reduces lift and optimizes the balance between the front and rear ends for superior stability at high speeds. Honda has also conducted research on "feel-good breezes" to ensure both driver and passenger can savor the pleasures of open-top driving.

Honda designers devised an elegantly simple, yet purposeful interior in which the controls are placed close at hand, clustered close to the steering wheel. Dashboard height has also been reduced to let the driver concentrate on driving. The newly designed, snug, full bucket seats, small zero-offset steering wheel, and high center console help the driver feel totally at one with the immediate environment. There is even an additional heater setting designed to encourage open-top motoring: in this open mode, the system pumps heated air to the center console, warming occupants from hip to toe. The S2000 offers the ultimate in comfort for top-down driving.

Combining superb driving performance with world-leading environmental friendliness and safety in a mass-produced open body design.
Advanced emissions processing and superior fuel efficiency.

To achieve unprecedented performance and remarkably clean exhaust emissions in a mass-production engine, Honda adopted a multi-port exhaust secondary air injection system and other related technologies to allow quicker heating of the catalytic converter, reducing harmful emissions especially during cold starts. In a cold start, the ignition timing is modified to give lower combustion temperatures for reduced emissions of NOx while still maintaining relatively high exhaust temperatures. Simultaneously, the multi-port secondary air injection exhaust system comes into operation to promote a quicker increase in the operating temperature of the catalytic converter. An electric pump sends air into the exhaust ports to react with CO and HC particles contained in the exhaust, thus increasing the exhaust gas temperature. The adoption of a thin-walled, low-heat-radiation, metallic honeycomb catalytic converter with a low cell density in place of the more traditional ceramic-type catalytic converter not only increases the exhaust gas processing surface, but also promotes a quick rise in temperature. Close control of the engine's air/fuel ratio is achieved by the use of oxygen sensors both upstream and downstream of the catalytic converter. With these innovations, and despite the difficulties arising from the long exhaust manifold required for high output, the S2000's engine is remarkable for its low emissions.

The new DOHC VTEC system reduces friction and improves breathing efficiency, allowing this ultrahigh-performance engine to be extremely frugal.

World-leading omnidirectional collision safety with the High X-Bone Frame.
Honda applied its G-Force Control technology to the S2000 for optimal control of the impact generated in collisions from all directions to achieve world-leading safety standards.

The key issues were to create a strong survival cell for both driver and passenger and to minimize any injuries in the event of a collision. To tackle these challenges, Honda conducted extensive research on collisions from all directions. The High X-Bone Frame, the double-walled steel-pipe-reinforced tubular front pillar, the highly rigid roll bars, and the twin door beams are all highly effective in providing the driver and passengers with a strong survival cell. Furthermore, impact energy generated by a collision is efficiently distributed to minimize any injuries to vehicle occupants by straightening the front side members.

The S2000 also features dual SRS airbags, 3-point ELR seatbelts with load-limiting pretensioners, and interior structures that protect the head in a collision. In addition, collapsible hood hinges and wiper pivots help minimize pedestrian injuries in the event of an accident.
With these developments the S2000 passes the 55km/h frontal full-flat collision test, the 64km/h frontal offset collision test, the 50km/h side collision test, and the 50km/h rear collision test, testaments to its world-leading collision safety.
