SEPTEMBER 28, 2011
Honda President Takanodu Ito has confirmed that a new NSX is under development.
However, the new NSX will be radically different from the brilliant 1990 original. And given Honda’s recent track record alarm bells are ringing already.
A replacement was initially planned for 2012 but shelved in December 2008 due to the economic turmoil and environmental concerns.
It was expected to feature a front-mounted V10 pumping out at least 500bhp. But these plans have been torn up.
The new NSX won’t have a V10. It’s unlikely to have a V8, but it will have a hybrid.
Current expectations involve a 3.5-litre V6 with 400bhp+ along with an electric motor to provide additional boost, perhaps similar to the new Jaguar C-X16 production concept.
Ito didn’t provide any details about the new sports car or even a launch timetable (it’s expected in 2014), but he did make a few comments which could fall into the interesting category.
He said it would be exhilarating to drive but also kind to the environment.
So expect a high-performance version of the Honda CR-Z sporty hybrid.
Ito’s aim is to take Honda back to its sporting roots…provided it doesn’t compromise the environment.
He added “our recent efforts have been focused on fuel efficiency, and that perhaps gives the impression Honda is behind with pushing the brand image of sportiness, but let me assure you that is not the case…We will address that impression with our new generation of cars.”
Speaking specifically about the new NSX he said,
“You can’t depend on a high power output to call a car sporty anymore. The original NSX was about high power but also good driving performance, and today power-to-weight is what we have to focus on.”
So assuming they use the same setup as the new Jaguar C-X16, 400bhp would give it 25bhp more.
At present it’s unknown how much power the electric motor will bring to the party, but assuming it’s similar to the Jag, a kerbweight of 1,600kg or less would make the NSX extremely rapid – 0-62mph in something starting with a 3, perhaps.
We hope so.
