Honda has announced a voluntary recall for 3 models, affecting 1.5 million vehicles in the United States and 760,000 in China. The recall affects 2005-2010 4-cylinder Accord models, 2007-2010 CR-V models, and 2005-2008 Element models. The recall only applies to these models that feature an automatic transmission.
These vehicles are being recalled to update the software that controls the automatic transmission. The automatic transmission's secondary shaft bearing may be damaged if the driver switches between drive, neutral, and reverse too quickly. This type of quick shifting is likely to occur if the driver trying to move their car that is stuck in the mud or snow. If the automatic transmission's secondary shaft bearing becomes damaged as a result of the quick -shifting, the engine may stall or the driver may not be able to put the car into park.
Honda says the affected vehicles can be fixed with a simple software update. By updating the transmission control software, the transition between gears will be eased, reducing potential damage to the vehicles. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths have occurred as a result of this problem.
Owners are encouraged to contact the nearest authorized Honda dealer as soon as possible to schedule a service appointment. The repairs will be performed free of charge. Honda will begin to alert drivers of the recall on August 31, 2011.
