You have to remove the four steering rack mounting bolts to put these in. Pretty easy install. After removing the airbox, it's about a 5 min. job.
I did notice a difference in response. At the time of install, the car was completely stock w/050's.
i heard this mod was not good for ap2 or maybe it was another mod
I found this in an SCC write up sbout the CR
The steering rack mounting structures were also stiffened with two tubular steel braces, used in conjunction with the CR's 13.8:1 ratio steering rack. All these stiffeners bolt to existing S2000 hard points, but aren't recommended for use with the stock 14.9:1 steering rack, as Honda engineers informed us that it upsets the balance of the regular S2000.
This one is from Honda's press release for the CR.S2000 CR: A quicker steering ratio of 13.8:1 and added steering gear box stiffeners give the S2000 CR a more reflexive demeanor for the race track while providing elevated levels feedback to the driver. The power steering unit's mounting has been reinforced with stiffener brackets that connect to the front of the unit, the rear of the unit, and the front subframe. The steering mount bushings' firmness has been decreased to better match the quicker steering ratio.
The only thing I could consider a 'possible' problem for these things on the AP2, is the increase in oversteer. The front end is definitely twitchier with these things. I love them though!
Upset the balance? What are you guys talking about?
All they are are metal braces that attach to the steering rack's mounting points. They aren't going to 'upset' anything. Most, if not all of the users I see that purchased them saw/felt no difference in the performance of the car.
I remember reading a few ap2 owners saying they felt no difference whatsoever and ended up selling them.

Just had some fun on 9 but not sure if I could really feel a difference. The idea definitely makes sense and maybe I would notice more of a difference if I was on R's due to more stress.
Feel? not sure anymore, I don't think you'll feel any difference unless your on R's and even then still not sure.
Just installed mine this morning. I have to say, I do notice a difference. I did some really hard turns on the car, almost like a slalom. That's when it was easy to see the difference. More responsive.
I also feel a difference in long turns. The car reacts different when going over bumps in turns at higher speeds. I'm happy with the outcome.
Installed mine, got on some on-ramps "fast and furious style" - no difference that I can notice yet - but it's a cheap OEM mod nonetheless.
I went through some more turns last night and could really tell the difference. Maybe for some of you that are not feeling a difference, could possibly be due to other mods?
My S is bone stock in the suspension department and I'm noticing a bit more oversteer with these stiffeners. It is WAY more responsive.

There ya go, I'm still running the 050's.
Installed and success! AP2, on stock 050, parts from HTG.
Easy to install: Unscrew airbox (3) to get access. It had 14 mm heads, which took a jointed extender to get to the bolts. The clip on the coolant can be slipped off easily. The front (tubular) bar was a tight fit under the cast screw in the rack...but it did fit.
Differences:
1. Slightly more road feel. Could be placebo.
2. Much more direct feel in the corner. I could actually see where the Honda warning came from (still over the top).
My turn in was a lot more direct, which caused me to hit the computer cut in when I did an AX style turn...I normally have to bend or initiate my turn a little early, and I don't have to do that anymore. I can actually feel the tire's sidewall.
I think our steering is very good. Well-isolated, balanced, but I never had that directness that I wanted. (Say like a miata or a prepped 240.) But is is a bit numb, and I hadn't realized exactly where that was coming from. Frankly I didn't think this mod would make much if any difference, given that the whole rack housing has to flex for these things to work. But I guess that the rack does flex, a lot.
I'm cranking up the caster soon, so I'll see what that does in addition, but I wanted to see how it would work, fully stock.
I just had them installed this weekend... I really don't feel much difference except maybe more direct feel in high speed corners. I'm thinking placebo like INTJ

sorry for bringing back an old thread. After installing these braces, I noticed the M10 bolt that goes through the rear brace has nothing to attach to on a non-CR subframe. This negates half the point of installing these braces; no additional connection to the actual subframe.
Does anyone happen to have a pic of this area of the CR subframe?? I wondering how plausible it would be have a suitable boss welded on.

The steering stiffeners only increase the effective stiffness of the mounting bolts that mount the rack to the sub-frame. There are really only two bolts that hold the rack from moving side to side which are on the drivers side. The other two just position it but don't prevent it from moving side to side. In theory the only thing you might get from this is feel.
I changed mine and noticed nothing. You'll feel more of a difference with the cr swaybar (depending on year of course)
It's the same steering ratio but not the same steering rack.
Besides the addition of the stiffeners parts other changes have been made.
The actual rack(steering gear box) itself is slightly different, the torque sensor assembly had been changed(AP1.AP2 base & CR all different), steering rack guide has been changed, and even the EPS units are all different from AP1,AP2 base and AP2 CR.

I was told if your car isn't a CR its useless because there is no attachment points for it on certain year cars.

53437-S2A-S00 and 53439-S2A-S01, but I think there is no place to bolt it to the sub-frame.
The CR steering rack stiffeners use the mounting bolts for the steering rack. Do the front first; remove the front bolts, install stiffener and reinstall the bolts. Do the same for the rear side of the steering rack. Super easy/quick job.
I had these a few years ago, and actually ended up selling them. I honestly couldn't tell a difference with them.

I read some where that Honda does not recommend these for other than the CR.
I believe Honda does not recommend it, because in other than the CR the back center is not mounted. I looked at a CR and compared it to my AP2. It appeared you could drill thru your subframe below the rear mounting hole, and using a spacer (steel or nylon washers) could properly secure the center rear mounting point.
Do you have a picture of what you are talking about?
I did read once something about the steering braces not being as effective on standard cars due to the lack of the rear chassis brace, but I didn't read that it hurt anything it was just less effective on standard cars. But I'm no expert. I'm curious as I do have a CR cockpit brace in my garage...I just haven't figured out how to get it installed in my AP1 yet. The mounting locations are non existent in the early cars so it's going to require more creativity.
Sorry, don't have any pictures. Not sure how the AP1 compares to the AP2 in the area behind the steering rack, but, from the top on the AP2 it looked like a pretty simple matter of drilling a hole and building up a spacer. I did not look under the car to see what might be in the way. Once you get the bracket, if the AP1 is anything like the AP2, you'll have no problems figuring it out.
As for the CR it has an inverted channel with wings that form a triangle and appear to be spot welded to the frame. The bracket attaches to the top of the inverted channel.
I pulled off my lower plastics and pulled out my 2000-2008 factory manual and I now see what you're talking about. You're talking about the small center bolt that would basically fix the steering brace to the front subframe correct? Number 28 on the schematic at the top.
Well I guess it's a good thing that I have a full machine shop to play in huh? I'm thinking I can make something that will work if given the motivation.
this is true..when installing mine i noticed there was no hole, nor no bolt to fix the center of the rear brace. however, i dont really care because even before i purchased the parts i was skeptical as to the effectiveness of the rear brace as it is a stamped piece. i was much more concerned with the front tubular brace. nevertheless, i did install both, and i do feel a difference
I'm thinking I could make a small bracket that mounts to the two upper bolts of the engine stop that would secure the steering brace. I'll have to look into that once my parts arrive. Here's a pic that I lifted from s2ki on the subject that I marked to show the bolts I'm talking about.
Well, here's what I came up with. A small aluminum bracket that uses the two front engine stop bolts and mounts to the CR steering brace.
And here it is installed:
