Inside the Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster 12R
――The Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster 12R, displayed at this year's Tokyo Auto Salon, represents a significant project for Mazda Spirit Racing. What can you share about the model at this stage?
Maeda:
This car is, without question, the culmination of our race-derived expertise, know-how, and real-world testing results. The 12R model, limited to 200 units, features a 2-liter engine producing 200 horsepower—which is the maximum power we can currently extract from a production model Mazda MX-5 engine. We've incorporated race-developed technology into the suspension, with settings similar to our Super Taikyu race car. Each unit is carefully hand-assembled to ensure consistency, which adds significant value. It's completely different from other mass-production models in so many ways.
――Have you driven this model yourself?
Maeda:
Yes, I recently tested it at Okayama International Circuit. Naturally, it’s no match for our Super Taikyu car’s movement or lap times, but I’d say it’s the fastest Mazda MX-5 available right now. With its increased displacement, it has a slightly different positioning to the current model, but we've kept the lightweight, sporty character. And as it's a commercially available production model, we've designed it with everyday driving in mind, and gone for a comfortable ride rather than a stiff suspension setup.
――The concept model generated quite a buzz when it was unveiled at last year’s Auto Salon. Now that it's moving to production, do you see this elevating Mazda Spirit Racing's presence as a brand?
Maeda:
I want to be clear: we don’t see Mazda Spirit Racing as a sub-brand that uses racing merely as a marketing tool to launch cars. Our vision is to refine both our people and technology in the demanding environment of motorsports, and then translate those achievements into products. To put it bluntly, if our racing results hadn’t measured up, cancelling development of the production model was always an option. Having proven ourselves on the track means we can proudly offer the Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster 12R to our customers with complete confidence.

El asunto es que, cansado ya de repasar anuncios del S2000 con precios tan altos para un coche que se dejó de fabricar, si mal no recuerdo, en agosto de 2009 (hará pronto 17 años), y después de tener una unidad MY07 matriculada en 2009, blanca perlada, en un estado en el que hoy me costaría desembolsar por él no menos de 40.000/45.000€; viendo como, poco a poco, se me va pasando el arroz, animado por epsylon y por S2000Gr, y envenenado por un amigo que ha comprado un ND2 ST blanco «Snow Flake», me he animado a adquirir un Mazda MX-5 184 CV Exclusive-Line en color Soul Red, matriculado en marzo de 2025, y con tan solo 2.1800 kms. Unidad Soft-Top, claro, que es la que entiendo me puede proporcionar sensaciones más parecidas a nuestro aclamado y para mí inolvidable S2000.

Product information "Performance package ND1 2.0 "S2000""
This performance package is developed by SPS Motorsport on the racetrack, adapted for street use, and continuously refined. All components are engineered in-house and used in our own race cars — delivering maximum performance, uncompromising quality, and a clean, OEM-like engine bay appearance.
Power Upgrade to 205 HP
In Stage 2, we install a high-flow SPS Motorsport header with integrated sports catalytic converter, along with a set of Piper Cams performance camshafts. The cam timing is precisely adjusted to ensure optimal power delivery and high-revving response.
Note: Full power output is only achieved when paired with an exhaust system featuring a minimum pipe diameter of 55 mm. We recommend our Group A exhaust system, which can be added as an accessory during checkout. TÜV registration is only possible with this configuration.
Conversion to shorter rear axle
In combination with the performance enhancement a 3.45 final drive is installed. This brings smaller rpm drops while shifting for a lively acceleration compared to the OEM final drive.
Two Options – Parts Package or Full Installation
You can choose between two configurations:
-Parts Package (without installation): Receive all components (including the parts for the DIY differential assembly) for self-installation. No tuning, dyno protocol, or TÜV registration included.
-Full Installation (with tuning & registration): All components are professionally installed at SPS Motorsport. The ECU is then individually tuned on our in-house dyno and on the road — including a dyno protocol. Finally, the entire conversion is inspected and officially registered at our facility.
